San Marcos la Laguna is one of the most beautiful spots on Lake Atitlan. It is a small town with a population of 2200, the majority of the population Kaqchikel- speaking indigenous Mayans.

The town is named after Mark the Evangelist, the traditionally ascribed author of the Gospel of Mark. He was born in the 1st Century AD in Cyrene, Pentapolis of North Africa, according to Coptic tradition and died in 68AD. His feast day is celebrated on April 25. During the weeks around this date the town begins to celebrate with traditional music, dancing and a fair. Mark the Eveangelist’s symbol is the winged lion, which you will see at the entrance gate of San Marcos la Laguna.

In recent years, San Marcos la Laguna has become a centre for many searching for meditation, yoga and spirituality.

It´s always nice to know some Spanish when visiting a Spanish speaking country and even some Kaqchikel, but you won’t have any problems with English here in San Marcos too.
